A couple months ago these speaker grills came in for repair. The frames had warped and one had broken completely. they had once been owned by Herbie Hancock and the owner wanted them repaired with the original grill cloth.
Ok I'm up for a challenge. the factory frames were made out of sawdust particle board and were in rough shape due to their age. The first order of business would be to cut new frames out of 1/2" birch plywood so measurements were taken from the one frame that wasn't completely destroyed.
2 new frames were cut and then stained with ebony stain. This wasn't easy as the temperature dropped below freezing so the staining process was brought into the house where it was warmer.
After the stain dried several hundred staples were removed one at a time to remove the old grill cloth as carefully as possible since they were nearly 60 years old.
Once freed the old cloth was stretched by hand onto the new frames and secured with 1/4" staples resulting in a very tight fit. All the years of stains and wear were preserved in a frame that will stay on the cabinets like they should.
