Hagstrom Viking Broken neck
I had a customer bring in a Hagstrom Viking for a repair. The neck had broken away from the body leaving a fairly nasty ragged break to the back of the guitar. They requested it be fixed enough for play-ability but not a full restoration as that would cost more than the guitar was worth. With a missing piece of wood at the back of the neck pocket it was time to get creative. This guitar appeared to have been Pete Townsended as there was damage to the inside of the neck pocket as well as the outside.
The first step was to clean the old glue from the tennon and see what I got myself into.
I then decided that I would need to rebuild the inside of the neck pocket and span the now gaping hole where the strap button used to be. I decided I'd use Walnut and hand shape it to fill the hole and span the inside of the neck pocket so would need to shave some off the back of the neck tennon to keep height and neck angle correct for the guitar to be playable and have a decent relief/action.
After cutting all the parts and cleaning out the shattered fibers of body wood the inside of the neck pocket was filled with wooden plugs where the wood had broken away and sanded smooth for a nice tight fit. I decided Hyde glue would be the best option for reattaching the neck as it has a longer set up time so I could adjust as needed prior to clamping it for drying.
I was also told the pick up selector switch was broken, as was the shaft for the volume pot so rewiring was needed.
An oil finish was used on the section of walnut visible and a quick close match for paint was done surrounding the fix. Again this was a repair and not a restoration so to keep the cost down for the customer corners needed to be cut and paint match was the easiest to cut on and still have a very playable guitar as that just affects appearance. The entire fix took about 2 months as I had other guitars here for repair at the same time and it went well and turned into a nice sounding and playing guitar that other had told the owner was a total loss and should just be thrown away.
